Grafton To Provide Consultation And Training To 4,000 In California Developmental Disability Centers

The California Department of Developmental Services has awarded Grafton Integrated Health Network a contract to train nearly 4,000 staff in four separate developmental centers on The Grafton Method and Ukeru. The Grafton Method is a trauma-informed treatment model that has been recognized by the National Council for Behavioral Health, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), and Negley Associates, among others. Training and consultative services within California’s developmental disability centers is scheduled from January through June 2015.

The Grafton Method has had considerable success since its innovation over eleven years ago in helping behavioral healthcare providers nationally and internationally duplicate the success of Ukeru, a unique approach to crisis management. Ukeru is based upon receiving, engaging, sensing, feeling and responding to what someone is trying to communicate through our actions. It provides employees with skills and tools to protect themselves and, equally important, the clients they support. Grafton’s training and consultation services commences with an extensive examination of programs currently used at organizations based on a set of internal standards developed within Grafton.

“Our entire method is focused in trying to figure out what an individual is trying to communicate. It emanates from a deep-rooted philosophy that treatment interventions should be focused on a foundation of comfort versus control,” said Kim Sanders, Executive Vice President of Grafton.
