Trainer Spotlight: Vicky Brown

Q: How long have you been an Ukeru trainer?

A: Since January 2020 – over 5 years

Q: What population do you work with? What inspired you to get into this field?

A: K-12 special education students. I love working with students and helping them to get the most out of their education.

Q: What part of Ukeru do you enjoy teaching the most and why?

A: What I most like to teach and get across to participants is how hard it is to “retrain” the brain to learn new behaviors and unlearn previous, less appropriate behaviors.

Q: What would you say to someone who is unsure about using Ukeru?

A: Ukeru has helped our staff feel more comfortable in working with students with aggressive behaviors. It has also helped to ensure positive relationships with staff due to not needing to use restraint.

Q: What advice or tip would you give to a new Ukeru trainer?

A: Buy-in can sometimes take time – don’t give up! It’s worth having the training and the tools to help our students.

Q: How has Ukeru impacted your life?

A: I enjoy having multiple crisis prevention tools to offer to our staff to help keep them and our students safe.

Q: What is your favorite quote or a motto that you like to live by?

A: Treat everyone with respect, no matter their behavior towards you.

Q: What three words would you use to describe Ukeru?

A: Support, Relationships, Safety
